After last night's rain, skies have become mostly sunny over the Triad this afternoon as the overnight storm system has moved offshore to allow ozone and particle pollution AQI to rise into the upper Code GREEN range. An upper level low will strengthen over the northeastern United States later this evening and remain nearly stationary over the region through the rest of the week and into the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Skies should remain mostly sunny tomorrow ahead of a relatively dry cold front that is expected to move in from the northwest by the early evening hours, which should allow ozone and particle pollution levels to reach the upper Code GREEN range prior to the passage of the boundary. Drier and cooler west-northwesterly winds are expected to be fairly persistent as the upper level low remains situated north of the Triad, preventing the low-level air mass to stagnate and allow for growth in pollution concentrations. Some downsloping winds may generate some compressional warming east of the Appalachians to enhance ozone concentrations, but air quality levels should easily remain Code GREEN Friday and through the weekend.
